Planning For A Kentucky Derby Visit

If you’re going to visit Kentucky, make sure to do it during the Kentucky Derby. This is one of the major horse races in the United States and is a two-day event that attracts people from all over the world. Over the years, traditions at the Kentucky Derby have grown to include outrageous and gorgeous hats on the ladies and white suits and Panama hats for the gents. If this is your first visit to the Kentucky Derby, there are several things to keep in mind as you plan your trip.

The first consideration is travel to the city. There is an international airport and most major airlines have flights during this period. There are also airports in nearby Lexington and Cincinnati that are within easy driving distance.

Unless you have a rich uncle with a box, you’ll need tickets to the Derby. Prices range from about $50 for general admission up several thousands of dollars for a box seat. Premium seating sells fast, so if you want a good seat, purchase the tickets as soon as you know you are traveling to Louisville for the Derby. Prices tend to increase as the race gets closer, even for general admission, so getting tickets early is a good way to save some money.

Lodging is another consideration during the Derby. There are hotels and other accommodations near the racetrack, but these fill up very fast and are sometimes booked years in advance. You will most likely need transportation to Churchill Downs. If you drive, you may be able to find parking at one of the homes near the track. These places often open their property for visitors to park and charge $15 and up for the day. You could also take a cab, but again, it is important to play ahead. It can be very difficult to get a cab during the Derby, so you may want to place advanced reservations for a limo service or van service.

If you are staying in town for a few days, take some time to check out some of Louisville’s other attractions. The Muhammad Ali Museum houses many objects from this boxing legend’s career. Louisville, Kentucky was Ali’s hometown and they celebrate their hometown hero.

There is also a Kentucky Derby Museum which is inside the Churchill Down’s complex. This museum introduces visitors to the history and heritage of the Derby.

Take some time to plan your trip to the Kentucky Derby. Make reservations early and buy your tickets as soon as possible. This is a very popular event.
