Summer 2010 Photo album

Have you ever flown into Tegucigalpa?  It's an experience you'll never forget (in fact, the History Channel just named it the world's second most extreme airport).   Even more unforgettable, however, is what you will see and experience while you are here!  This summer, many people came to spend a week or two ministering with the Micah Project.  They were able to experience firsthand what God is doing through this ministry amidst the poverty and brokenness that exists in the Honduran capital.   Take a few minutes to see how He worked through many lives this summer!

The first week in July, we received the youth group from the Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church in Houston.  One of their main duties was to begin to rehab the Micah House, which was sorely in need of some repairs.  Here, they patch up the exterior walls and prep them for painting.

Left:  Judy (from MDPC) and Axelito take a few minutes away from painting to do a little dancin' in the street!  Right:  Marvin Morazán, who was on a break from Instituto CanZion in Costa Rica, paints the exterior light green.

The second week in July, we received a group from Brian and Natasha Wiggs' church family, the Grace Point church in Portland.   They spent their first few days with some of the Micah boys in western Honduras helping a local pastor build a new church.

In the midst of all the groups, the main theme this summer was rain, rain, and more rain.   One of the most extreme rainy seasons in many years brought flooding and landslides to Honduras and Central America.  Here, the street in front of the Micah House turns into a river after an afternoon downpour.

A group from the Riverwest church in Portland came to work with us for a few days at the end of July.  They had two jobs: to build a storage room in the Timothy House (which used to be the Leadership House) and to paint the interior of the Micah House.  Above:  the group smiles on top of Villa Linda Miller water tank.  Right: Tom and Megan from Riverwest work on the patio of the Micah House.

A group from the Randolph Street church in Charleston, West Virginia came for a few days in August.  One of their tasks was to build a home for a poor family from the city dump.  Here, they work alongside of Yeison (far right in the line of workers) and Axelito (blue shirt with stars) in order to finish the home in one day!

Our final summer group, at the end of August, was a vision trip from the Central Presbyterian Church in St. Louis, Missouri.   As part of that trip, we visited longtime Central member Chris Haughey, who founded a company called Tegu Toys last year.  Above, Central members listen as Chris explains his vision to create a sustainable, successful company that provides good jobs in a country with a huge amount of unemployment.

Recently, Chris hired Micah grad Oscar Izaguirre to be a supervisor at Tegu Toys.  Oscar (above) graduated from Missouri Baptist University in April 2010 with a degree in business administration.  Chris also hired Juan Carlos (below), who lived at Micah until the age of 18, to run the  machine that tags the blocks with the company logo.

In the midst of a busy and challenging summer, Micah's missionaries continue their challenging calling of helping our boys to put the past behind them and look to the future that God has planned for them.   Despite some difficult days in which they are called to walk through the valley of the shadow of death with these boys, our staff unflinchingly represents God's hope and love to these beloved children.

Clockwise, starting at top left:  John Bell horses around with Hector and Axelito; Jeremy Tolleson with adoring fans at Villa Linda Miller, Becca Bell walks to church with the boys and Jenna Miller smiles with Pedro Luis.

Daily life at Micah revolves around the boys' activities, whether it be sports, ministry, education or just goofing around the Micah House!  Above, left:  Hector and Nelson practice goalkeeping during one of their twice-a-week soccer practices.  Above, right:  Axelito and Miguelito visit Victor at the CEDER shelter for homeless seniors.  Below:  Miguel goofing off on the patio of the Micah House!
