Micah Project June 2010 Photo Update

Yeison is reflected in the mirror of the bus taking our mission team from Houston for a work day out in Villa Linda Miller.   We pray that Yeison...and all of our young men...would reflect their Savior's love day-by-day!

New horizons...

Above:  Micah staff and boys walk through a property that may hold the new Micah House.  After ten years in our current home, we have initiated a plan to build a new facility that would promote our boys' success in a more intentional way.  For our new generation of boys, which has come from harder backgrounds and more time on the streets, we firstly need some outdoor space, where they can kick a soccer ball around and burn off their boundless energy.   Our new house also needs a better kitchen, appropriate living space for group home parents, more storage, and a larger communal space for meetings and worship times.   The land above is in a community next to the Villa Linda Miller neighborhood...a twenty minute drive from our current location.  We'll let you know as plans firm up!

This is a picture of our current neighborhood, taken alongside the Micah House.  Because of a sharp increase in crime and drug use in this neighborhood, we feel the need to remove our boys, many of whom are trying to kick drug addictions, to a healthier environment.  At the same time, we plan to keep our current home as an outreach center so that we can continue to be a light in this needy place.

Above:  Nelson, with his bottle of yellow glue, has been on the streets for several years.    Since February, we have been able to take three boys out of this environment and into the Micah family.   Below: Becca chats with Nelson while visiting him in the outdoor market.

A team from First Presbyterian Church of Houston made their annual trek to Tegucigalpa in June to spend a week with the Micah Project.  Many of the team members have come to Honduras for years, and they are an important part of our family!

Dr. Robert Moore has been coming  with the Houston team yearly since 1999.  Every June, he helps to run a free clinic in the Villa Linda Miller community.  Here, he receives an appreciative hug from a small patient!

Wilmer helped the First Presbyterian team do VBS activities in the Villa Linda Miller school.  Here, he tells the story of David and Goliath.

Part of the First Presbyterian team's mission was to build a retaining wall around the school building in Villa Linda Miller.  Above, Linda Moore smiles by her section of the wall.   Below, Chris Herbold and Rallin Welch also prove themselves to be expert wall-builders!

Above: Kelly Small and Cauleen Stepp take a break from seeing patients in the Villa Linda Miller clinic to hug Miguel Angel.  Miguel Angel's mom, 30-year-old Kenia, died of cancer while the First Presbyterian team was in Honduras.  We were so grateful for the team's support during this difficult time!

Axelito gives a playful punch to Micah friend John Yarrington.   John (and his autoharp) brought a lot of smiles to to Honduras on the FPC trip!

Above:  Danilo sings a worship song during dinner with the First Presbyterian team.  Danilo is studying sacred music at a seminary in Siguatepeque, Honduras.

Cristofer, Hector and Wilmer also added their voices to the fun with the First Presbyterian team.  They have worked hard to write and produce new songs about their life and faith!

Go Catrachos!  June was an exciting month in Honduras because the national soccer team played in the World Cup for the first time since 1982, facing Chile, Spain and Switzerland.  Above, Miguel and Junior sport the team's jersey.

Maycol, who is a senior in high school this year, gives a big hug to his mom Aleyda.   Aleyda is one of the leaders of the Micah Moms' ministry, which strives to provide hope to our boys' moms through discipleship and sewing courses.  Our desire this year is to help the moms begin a micro-enterprise so that they can begin to generate an income for their families.
