Beautiful Honduras

Normally, our website highlights our ministries here in Honduras. Often, you see pictures of unspeakable poverty as we talk about our efforts in the city dump and on the streets of Tegucigalpa. But, Honduras is a country of great contrasts. Those scenes of poverty are played out amongst breathtaking beauty. Thanks to friends who have recently visited the Micah Project, especially Mark Griggs and Jeff Early, who visited Honduras on separate trips in January 2008, we have recently been able to capture glimpses of that beauty on film. We hope that you will fall in love with this country as much as we have after seeing this photo series, which we have entitled Beautiful Honduras.

Darkness and light over Tegucigalpa. Micah Project friend Mark Griggs captured the sun as its beams break through the January storm that rolled through this capital city.

Beautiful Lady of Sorrows. This historic downtown church, called Los Dolores (the Sorrows) was built in 1732 and has recently been lovingly restored. At night, the church is lit up in a ghostly purple that highlights its intricate facade. ~ Mark Griggs

Shades of green. This picture was taken on the road from Tegucigalpa to Valle de Angeles, a colonial town in the mountains outside the city. ~ Mark Griggs

Beautiful traditions. Here a boy and his grandmother haul firewood through the streets of Copan, on the Guatemalan border. They are from an indigenous group in Honduras called the Lencas. ~ Jeff Early

Transcendent ascension. Tegucigalpa is watched over by El Cristo de Picacho, a towering depiction of Christ as He ascends into heaven. This awe-inspiring statues stands on one of the highest points overlooking Tegucigalpa. ~ Mark Griggs

Beautiful faces. This woman makes her home in the market district of Tegucigalpa. Despite her poverty, the deep lines of her face and her bright smile speak of a life well lived. I have to say, I love her all the more because of the Metallica ski cap!!! ~ Mark Griggs
