August 2011 Photo Album!

August was chock-full of action at the Micah Project!  Since it was the last month of the U.S. vacation period, we had lots of friends and family members join us in our ministry here in Honduras.  We also managed to keep the boys moving in all of their activities and classes...kind of like the juggler keeping all of the plates spinning at once!  Take a look at the album below to see God working through the Micah Project in August!

Above:  for a "Day of Light" service project, the boys wrote notes of encouragement and faith, then passed them out to pedestrians in downtown Tegucigalpa along with apples and other snacks!

Micah 2.0 is drawing closer!  In August, our lawyer worked on the legal paperwork regarding the land purchase so that we can formalize the deal in September!  One of our board members, Howard Jacobson, flew in from Houston for a few days to help us do some brainstorming for the construction blueprints.

Above:  Santiago and Franklin from Villa Linda Miller helped lay out the proposed Micah House on the new land so that Brian, Howard and I could do a "walk through".  Pretty exciting stuff!

In early August, a team joined us from Gracepoint Community Church in Tigard, Oregon (Brian and Natasha Wiggs' home church).  Despite battling illness during the week, the team worked very hard to build one house and start the foundation on another!  They got up before dawn one day, traveled into the mountains of Honduras and built a wooden house for Edwin and Miguel's grandmother, Gloria Fugon.  Gloria lives in a coffee and sugar cane-growing mountain village with no electricity or modern amenities...but incredibly beautiful nonetheless!  Her small wooden house was rotting from the inside-out and threatening to come down on top of her.  The Gracepoint team was able to build her a new wooden house in a day...thanks to another Christian ministry called Torch Missions which runs a "House in a day" project!

Wilmer had a lot of fun with the chain saw while building Grandma Fugon's house!  Here, he cuts off the extra board length near the door.

Above:  John, Treena and her daughter Sareena work on the interior floor of Grandma Fugon's new house!

Below:  Kristi gives a hug to Grandma Fugon in the window of her new house.

The other big project for the Gracepoint team was to build the foundation of a new house in the Villa Linda Miller community.  This was hot, exhausting (and slightly dangerous!) work!  Above, Bob, Spencer and John dig out an area of the foundation!

The new house in Villa Linda Miller is for Ana Herman, who has worked for the Micah Project for ten years.   The best thing about the  group's week was presenting the foundation to her...since we had kept the project a secret from her until that moment!

Above:  the moment when Ana discovered that the house was to be hers.  She was overcome with emotion!  Currently,  she and her two children live on one of the most dangerous blocks in all of Tegucigalpa.

The Gracepoint team also produced a Vacation Bible School for the children of Villa Linda Miller...directed by Marvin Morazan, of course!  Marvin has such a gift with children, and he put it to good use that week!  Here, he and Charissa lead the children in a song.

Speaking of songs, the groups that come are always treated to original music by our resident rappers.   Here, Los Little Boiz, Miguelito and Axelito, peform Juntos Podemos (Together we can do it!) on the group's last night in Honduras.

Another August visit was by David and Linda Miller, Michael's parents.  They have been regular visitors over the years, and always enjoy getting reacquainted with their grandsons!

August also brought with it Third Quarter exams in our home-schooling program.  All of the boys strive to be on the honor roll since it brings with it the possibility of a meal at Dennys as a prize (yes, there is now a Dennys in Tegucigalpa!).   Here, Miguelito (second grade) and Wilmer (sixth grade) work on their exams on the patio.

The boys continue to train soccer every Wednesday and Friday at the national Olympic athletic facility.  Here, Axelito goes in for a score as Miguelito runs in behind him on defense!

Ever since being interviewed on a few radio stations last month, the manager of those stations has graciously given us free tickets to the premiers of all the big new movies.  In August, we got to see the premier of the Green Lantern!  Very fun!

Our soccer ministry to street youth continued on a weekly basis in August.  Here, two street youth (the one on the ground is nicknamed "Shark" and the one doing the leg kick is nicknamed "a Thousand Years") do warm-ups before the soccer match!

Marvincito is in his fourth month of drug rehab after having spent the entire previous year on the streets.  Although his addiction has caused some anxiety that makes him want to go back to the streets, he has resisted that temptation and is successfully completing rehab.  Although his official time is done in September, we have asked that they allow him to stay there an extra couple of months...simply because there is no place for him to go once he gets out!   Continue to pray for emotional, physical and spiritual healing for this young man.

Becca takes a few people out to visit him every other week to help encourage him.  Here, Pedro Luis, Becca and Nelson spend Sunday evening with him the week of his 17th birthday!

Our Sunday night worship times continue to be a highlight in our week.  Often, we have between forty and fifty people, between Micah guys, staff and friends,  join us for a time of worship and reflection.  Here, John and Israel lead the group in song!

Oscar Amaya moved to Wheaton, Illinois in August to begin his college studies at Wheaton College (alma mater of Michael, John, Becca, Jeremy and David!!!).   Long-time Micah friend Hannah Rogers is also starting at Wheaton; here, they pose in front of the Billy Graham Center on Wheaton's campus!

Brayan Chavez has been at a YWAM base in San Jose, Costa Rica to complete their Discipleship Training School.  He has been learning tons!  On his Facebook page, he wrote:  "A lot of people are ready to do big things for the Lord, but not everyone is as happy about accomplishing the little things.  One thing that I have learned here is that it is so important to be faithful, even when no one is looking!"  Here, Brayan (green shirt) jumps for joy with the other YWAM students.
